Speaker endorses several Bills

Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena has endorsed the certificate on several Bills which were passed in Parliament in the recent past.

The Speaker endorsed the certificate to the Betting and Gaming Levy (Amendment) Bill, the Appropriation (Amendment) Bill and the Sri Lanka Institute of Taxation (Incorporation) (Amendment) Bill on the 21st.

Accordingly, these Bills came into effect from August 21, 2023 as the Betting and Gaming Levy (Amendment) Act No. 11 of 2023, the Appropriation (Amendment) Act No. 12 of 2023 and the Sri Lanka Institute of Taxation (Incorporation) (Amendment) Act No. 13 of 2023.

“Online Safety Act to be amended in line with SC determination”

Cabinet Spokesman Minister Vijitha Herath says the government maintains that the Online Safety Act should be amended.

However, it will be amended following a Supreme Court ruling and in line with the Supreme Court’s determinations, he said while addressing the weekly cabinet briefing today (Nov. 06).

He also said that the matter of whether to amend the current Act or to introduce a new one would be taken up in the new Parliament.

The Online Safety Act, which was established to tackle the spread of misinformation online, faces claims of constitutional inconsistencies.

No change to Muslim Marriage & Divorce Act – Minister

The government will not make any changes to the Muslim Marriage and Divorce Act (MMDA), Minister Vijitha Herath said.

“No need has arisen to change the Muslim Marriage and Divorce Act at this juncture either,” he added.

During the Cabinet media briefing held today (Nov. 06), he said that any Act with regard to religions will be amended only after consulting the respective religious leaders.

CBK’s security remains unchanged – Vijitha

Cabinet Spokesman – Minister Vijitha Herath has stated that the security detail of former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga has neither been removed nor reduced.

Responding to questions raised at the Cabinet media briefing today (Nov. 06), he stated that Ms. Kumaratunga still has a 57-strong security detail.

Minister Herath said that a committee has been appointed to look into the matter and once a report is provided, the Cabinet will take a decision in this regard.
