Sri Lanka Gem and Jewellery exhibition held in Shanghai

A Sri Lankan Gem and Jewellery Exhibition was held at The St. Regis Hotel in Shanghai between 22 to 23 March 2023 with the participation of Zam Gems Sri Lanka under the patronage of Sri Lanka Consulate General in Shanghai.

At the exhibition, Sri Lankan gems which included blue sapphires, pink sapphires (rubies), Alexandrite and Cat’s-eye Chrysoberyl were displayed. In addition, a variety of jewellery including necklaces, rings, earrings, bracelets which were crafted using above mentioned Sri Lankan gems and stones were also exhibited.

The Chairman of Shanghai Jade and Gem Exchange Simon Chan participated in the event with his team of officials and reputed Chinese buyers.  In addition, many other buyers across China, Gem and Jewellery traders, gem collectors, members of Shanghai Diplomatic Corp,  expatriates as well as other interested parties and visitors were present at the event.

Further, the Consulate used this opportunity to promote Sri Lanka tourism by displaying and distributing Sri Lanka tourism brochures among prospective gem buyers, members of Diplomatic Corp and visitors while responding to tourism related queries.

This event, which was the 01st Gem and Jewellery exhibition held in Shanghai in the aftermath of the opening up of Chinese borders (ending months long Covid-19 restrictions), proved to be a huge success.

Ministry to settle outstanding Rs. 1,989.75 mn to contractors by end of December

Urban Development and Housing Minister Prasanna Ranatunga said that a proposal to establish a separate development bank for the construction industry has been submitted to the Treasury.

The Minister said that based on the feedback received, the new bank will be established.

Meanwhile, Minister Ranatunga said that the amount of Rs. 1,989.75 million which the Ministry was not able to pay to contractors will be paid before the end of this month. The Ministry was unable to pay this money due to the Covid pidemic and the economic crisis.

The Minister said that with the payment of that amount, all the unpaid bills of the Urban Development and Housing Ministry due to the Covid pidemic will be fully paid.

In addition, the Minister also said that the amount of Rs. 1,112.57 million to be paid to the construction contractors for the development work done during this year is also planned to be fully paid before the end of this year.

Heavy vehicle movement restricted on Badulla-Colombo main road

The movement of heavy vehicles has been restricted between Hali Ela and Uduwara until further notice due to heightened risks of landslides along the Badulla-Colombo main road (route No. 99).

The announcement was made by the Badulla District Disaster Management Centre (DMC) today.

Hence, motorists are strongly advised to seek alternate routes from Hali Ela via Etampitiya to Bandarawela, according to police authorities.

Furthermore, all long-distance passenger transport buses will be required to utilize these alternate routes starting tomorrow, in accordance with the decision made during the meeting.

Necessary precautions are underway to ensure the safety of all motorists and passengers amidst the ongoing landslide threats.
