Sri Lanka will take part in the upcoming BRICS summit from October 22-24, 2024, on the invitation of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
However, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and the JVP/NPP leadership will not attend due to their focus on campaigning for the parliamentary elections.
BRICS, consisting of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, aims to unite developing economies in opposition to the political and economic dominance of North America and Western Europe. Russia chairs this year’s summit.
Sri Lanka’s membership application to BRICS is still pending, a move initially recommended by the former Wickremesinghe Cabinet. New BRICS members include Egypt, Iran, Ethiopia, and the UAE.
