Following the recent arrests of foreign nationals, primarily Chinese, involved in online scams, Sri Lankan police are seeking updated laws to combat evolving criminal tactics.
Police Spokesman DIG Nihal Thalduwa emphasized that current regulations must keep pace with changing methods of cybercrime, calling for amendments to the Computer Crimes Act to address modern technological advancements more effectively.
Over 300 foreign nationals have been arrested in recent days, with hundreds of mobile phones and computers seized.
In the latest incident, 10 foreign nationals, including Malaysians, Ethiopians, a Kenyan, and a Chinese national, were apprehended in Chilaw for involvement in online financial fraud.
DIG Thalduwa highlighted a rising trend of “scam camps,” where criminals use rented properties for their operations, and stressed the need for stricter regulations on those providing accommodations for such activities.
Recovering money from online scams remains difficult for victims, further emphasizing the urgency of stronger legal measures.
