Sridharan resigns from ITAK leadership?

S. Sridharan, who was recently elected as the leader of the Ilankai Thamil Arasu Kachchi (ITAK), has resigned from his post, reports say.

According to a report on ‘Aruna’, the decision has been formally informed to the party.

Sridharan was elected ITAK leader in late January after securing majority votes at a secret ballot held at the Trincomalee Municipal Council Hall. MP and President’s Counsel M.A. Sumanthiran as well as former MP Sinithambi Yogeswaran also contested for the leadership.

The ITAK National Convention was to be held in late February in Trincomalee and the new leader was to be appointed officially at the convention.

However, a member of ITAK had filed a case against the party national convention at the Jaffna District Court to which the court had issued an interim injunction.

Furthermore, the Trincomalee District Court has also barred the convention from being conducted over a case being filed at the Trincomalee District Court.

Noting that his appointment becomes unconstitutional in this backdrop, Sridharan has tendered his resignation, urging the party to re-elect a leader after the court proceedings conclude and that he will also re-run for the party leadership then.
