STF to be deployed to control power cable thefts on Katunayake expressway

The Road Development (RDA) has estimated that Rs. 900 million would be required to restore the damaged electrification system of the of the Katunayake – Colombo expressway.

Speaking at a media briefing held yesterday (Dec. 26), a RDA official said that the theft of copper cables of the expressway had commenced during the lockdowns of the Covid-19 pandemic and had continued upto now.

Noting that the thieves have done extensive damage to 14 feeder and transformer points along the way, the official said they are going to secure Rs. 900 million through a Cabinet paper to restore the damage,” he said.

He also said that the STF is to be deployed to control power cable thefts during night times.

The RDA, upon instructions by Minister Bimal Ratnayake, requested Public Security Minister Ananda Wijepala to act in this regard.
