Hostile street food owner bailed (Update)

The street food owner who was arrested after being hostile to a tourist, has been granted bail.

When the accused was produced before the court earlier today (17), he was ordered to be released on a cash bail of Rs. 50,000 and surety bail of Rs. 1 million.

The suspect was accused of trying to charge Rs. 1,900 from a foreigner for a Kottu Roti and becoming hostile after the foreigner refused to buy the food item at the quoted price.

A street food outlet owner in Keselwatta who had become verbally hostile to a foreign national had been arrested yesterday (16), police say.

Videos of the incident had gone viral online.

The foreigner had approached the street food stall and inquired of the prices, refusing to purchase after the prices were stated. In response, the suspect had threatened the foreigner to move if he did not intend to purchase anything.

The arrested suspect is a 51 year old and a resident of the Colombo 12 area.
