Parliamentarians M.A. Sumanthiran and S. Sritharan have reportedly applied to be the next leader of Ilankai Tamil Arasu Kachchi (ITAK) party. The leader of the Tamil National Alliance R. Sampanthan MP and the leader of ITAK Mavai Senathirajah, the former MP, are slated to retire from politics next year.

Sumanthiran and Sritharan have forwarded their applications when applications were invited for the next leader of the party.

Party Secretary P. Sathyalingam had announced that an application should be submitted with the approval of more than six regular members of the party.

Accordingly, the application submitted by Sunmanthiran has received the recommendation and approval of 12 regular members, while Sritharan has received the approval of six regular members.

After deciding on the ITAK leadership, then a decision will be taken as to who will be the leader of the TNA, a coalition of Tamil political parties of which ITAK is also a member.

The ITAK Central Committee is scheduled to meet in Vavuniya in January and the new leader of the party is to be chosen at the meeting.
