Sri Lanka’s Supreme Court issued an interim injunction order suspending the acceptance of nominations for the Kalmunai Municipal Council. Accordingly, the order will be in effect until the conclusion of the examination of the FR applications filed over the matter with the Supreme Court.

The order was made by Supreme Court Justices Vijith Malalgoda, Yasantha Kodagoda, and Mahinda Samayawardena upon considering two Fundamental Rights applications on Thursday (19).

The applications were filed by Ahmed Lebbe Mohamed Saleem and Ahmed Raheem Mohamed Azeem, two residents from Saithamaruthu.

The FR was filed claiming that their area of residence belongs to the Sainthamaruthu Urban Council, however, the recent gazette had delcared they belong to the Kalmunai Municipal Council.

The Supreme Court Justices once again ordered for notice to be sent to the respondents in the applications who are the Chairman and Members of the National Election Commission, Chairman and Members of the National Delimitation Committee, the Returning Officer for Ampara, and the Assistant Returning Officer.

President’s Counsel Nishan Kariyappan appearing for the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress said that the SLMC will come forward as an intermediary to the applications.
