The weapon, which was seized by the Mulleriyawa Police from a suspect who attempted to shoot at police disregarding orders, had been given by a sergeant working in the Colombo Crime Division (CCD) to the suspect, it was reported.
The suspect tried to run away after shooting at the police officers when they attempted to check a suspicious three-wheeler on the 19th.
According to a phone call given by a drug dealer named Aloysius Smith residing in Dubai, a businessman from Ratmalana had gone to Pillewa, Boralesgamuwa with the police sergeant.
Investigations revealed that the businessman had taken that weapon and another weapon from a person who came in a Wagon R vehicle on May 15.
The police sergeant had taken part in this trip with the businessman and left the two firearms in the cabin of the car and handed them over to the criminals in Ratmalana as per the instructions received from the call from Dubai.
The businessman is a resident of Sylvester Road, Ratmalana.
Investigations revealed that the 40 years old suspect sends the money earned from drug smuggling to the drug trafficker in Dubai through the Undiyal system.
The businessman was arrested on the 20th by the officers of the Western Province (South) Crime Division.
It has also been revealed that he has been working in Dubai for some time.
While the police sergeant has not been arrested so far, a senior police officer said that further investigations are being conducted.
