The Tamil Nadu Government has approved INR 300 million for constructing new houses for Sri Lankan Tamil refugees at the Kottapattu camp on the Tiruchi-Pudukotai highway.
The camp, one of the largest in the state, shelters around 1,200 refugees in 470 houses, many of which are in poor condition due to age and lack of maintenance.
The Commissionerate of Rehabilitation and Welfare of Non-Resident Tamils plans to build over 500 new houses near the existing camp.
The District Rural Development Agency (DRDA) will oversee the construction.
Current residents will continue living in their homes until the new houses are ready.
