Tamil political parties name common candidate

Former Parliamentarian – P. Ariyanethran has been nominated as the Tamil common candidate for the upcoming presidential election in Sri Lanka.

The announcement was made at an event in Jaffna.

P. Ariyanethran is set to contest in this year’s presidential race, representing an alliance of seven Tamil political parties from the Northern and Eastern provinces, along with various civil organizations.

The alliance backing Ariyanethran comprises prominent groups such as the TELO led by MP Selvam Adaikkalanathan, the PLOTE organization under MP Dharmalingam Siddharthan, and the Tamil Makkal Koottani steered by MP CV Wignesaran.

Wimal to launch song protesting against strikes on Iran & Palestine

National Freedom Front (NFF) leader Wimal Weerawansa will release a protest song titled “Whose Bullets Are These?” (original Sinhala: “Kageda Me Moonissam?”) today (July 08).

The song, written and performed by Weerawansa himself, is a response to recent airstrikes on Iran and ongoing violence against Palestinians, which he attributes to what he terms the “Yankee-Zionist alliance.”

Showers expected in some areas today

Several spells of showers will occur in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in the Kandy, Nuwara-Eliya, Galle and Matara districts today (July 08), the Department of Meteorology said.

A few showers may occur in the North-western province as well.

Meanwhile, strong winds of about 40-50kmph can be expected at times over the Western slopes of the central hills and in the Northern, North-central and North-western provinces and in the Trincomalee and Hambantota districts.

Nishantha appointed to Harshana’s MP seat

The Election Commission has officially gazetted Ushettige Don Nishantha Jayaweera as a Member of Parliament representing the National People’s Power (NPP). 

This appointment has been made to fill the parliamentary vacancy created by the recent resignation of Harshana Suriyapperuma, the Election Commission said.

Dr Suriyapperuma was recently sworn in as the new Secretary to the Ministry of Finance after resigning from Parliament.
