Teens who beat a man to death with helmets, detained

The three teenage boys who were arrested for beating to death a man with motorcycle helmets were ordered by the Mathugama Magistrate’s Court to be detained at the Child Remand Home in Makola until the 28th of February.

The teenagers were identified as grade 11 students.

The remains of the late Ranga Viraj Jayasinghe, a 34-year-old father of one, who was brutally beaten to death by teenagers using their helmets was moved to his residence in Welipenna on Thursday (17) morning.

Relatives said the final rites will be performed on Friday (17).

Ranga Viraj Jayasinghe was beaten to death with helmets for advising a group of teenagers to wear helmets when riding on motorcycles.

Ranga who advised these teens for their own safety leaves behind a 11-month-old daughter.

According to family and friends, Ranga was eagerly waiting to celebrate his daughters’ first birthday.

Sri Lanka Police said that Ranga had advised a group of teenage boys, who were riding two motorcycles at excessive speeds in Welipenna, to wear their helmets.

However, an argument had broken out between the two sides and the teenage boys had beaten Ranga with their helmets, and Ranga later succumbed to his injuries.
