Journalist Tharindu Uduwaragedara has been informed to report to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) at 10.30 am today (04).

He has been summoned to record a statement regarding a comment he made during a press conference held at the Centre for Society and Religion in Maradana on May 29.

Uduwaragedara has said that the arrest of Nathasha Edirisooriya, who is accused of insulting Buddhism, was wrong.

Edirisooriya has been remanded until July 05.

Meanwhile, the Federation of Media Employees’ Trade Unions in a statement said summoning Mr. Uduwaragedara to the CID was another step in media suppression.

According to the statement, this is the third time that he has been summoned to the CID in the recent past.

It further said that he has been summoned in an environment where the government is proposing several repressive Bills such as the Electronic Media Regulatory Authority Act and the Social Media Regulation Act.
