Thieves steal 55 pigs from a farm in Balangoda!

A group of 15 people that broke into an animal farm in Iduranpitiya, Balangoda had tied the guard of the farm to a tree before stealing 55 pigs in the early hours of February 14, the Balangoda Police said.

The owner of the pigpen has told the police that the value of the stolen pigs is more than Rs.1.5 million and that piglets were also among the stolen pigs.

The farm guard had been living with his wife and four-year-old child in a room on the farm.

The guard told the police that someone knocked on the door at around 12.30 in the morning and when the door was opened, a group of people were standing near the door.

He told the police that they left his wife inside the house and locked the door, tied him to a teak tree and loaded the pigs into a lorry.

The guard said a cab vehicle also entered the farm and they opened the door of the room before fleeing.

After the robbers had left the farm, the guard’s wife came out and untied his hands and then they informed the owner about the incident.

According to the guard, this robbery has been carried out in a short period of one and a half hours.

Police suspect that the robbers know the farm well.

350 medical specialists have left SL

A study conducted by a group of specialist doctors at the Ministry of Health has revealed that 350 specialists have left the country during recent times.

Many of them have left for countries such as UK and Australia. According to a spokesperson of the ministry, economic hardships have been cited as one of the main reasons for them to do so.
Doctors suggest that the government should provide an immediate solution to this issue.

Commenting on the issue, Secretary of the Health Ministry – Dr. Palitha Mahipala says that there is still a shortage of anesthetists and pediatricians after most of them had left the country.

However, some who have gone for training, are returning after their training is complete, he adds.

Meanwhile, sources in the Health sector also say that over 200 nurses too have gone overseas, but new recruits have enabled to prevent hospital operations from continuing without hindrance.

Details of SL recruits in Russian military, sought

Sri Lanka has sought a report from Russian authorities on details of Sri Lankan military recruits and how many of them have died during the Russian-Ukraine conflict, the ‘Aruna’ newspaper reports.

According to a directive by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Sri Lanka, the Sri Lankan Embassy in Russia has forwarded this request to the Russian Ministry of Defence.

Previously, the Human Trafficking, Human Smuggling and Maritime Crime Investigation Division (CID) arrested a retired major and an employment agent, identified as leaders of an organized scheme that recruited retired military personnel as mercenaries for the Russian army.

The Defence Ministry in Sri Lanka has urged the Tri Force commanders to brief Tri Force personnel not to fall for such rackets.

Delegation to visit NZ over opening a SL High Commission in Wellington

Following the decision by the Cabinet of Ministers to open a Sri Lanka High Commission in Wellington, New Zealand.

An official delegation led by Director General, Overseas Assets Management & Development Division of the Ministry Pradeepa Saram, is to visit New Zealand next week to attend to matters related to the opening of the High Commission, Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs state.

A media release by the MFA states that the delegation will visit New Zealand from April 22- 25 and will engage in meetings with officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade of New Zealand as well as with other related agencies and stakeholders.

Sri Lanka is to open a Sri Lanka High Commission in Wellington following a Cabinet decision to do so.

New Zealand has a significant Sri Lankan expatriate community comprising mostly professionals and students.  The opening of a resident Mission will facilitate outreach to the community and pursuit of stronger collaboration in the fields of trade, education, sports, science & technology, tourism and health.
