Tiran departs from CID premises (Update)

Former Minister of Public Security –  Tiran Alles has left the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) earlier this evening after giving a statement for over 5 1/2 hours. 

He appeared before the CID this morning to provide a statement regarding a shooting incident that occurred in front of a prominent hotel in Weligama in 2023.

Tiran Alles appears before CID

Former Minister of Public Security Tiran Alles has arrived at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) this morning (March 31).

He was summoned before the CID to record a statement regarding the death of a police sergeant attached to the Colombo Crimes Division (CCD) during a shooting incident near the W15 hotel in Weligama, Matara in 2023.

London-bound Air India flight crashes minutes after takeoff

A London-bound Air India flight carrying 242 people, has crashed shortly after take-off in Ahmedabad, western India.
Flight AI171 was travelling from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick.

According to foreign media, the plane crashed into a doctors’ hostel.

According to Air India, there were 169 Indian nationals on the flight, as well as 53 Britons, one Canadian national and seven Portuguese nationals,

Tracking website Flightradar24 says it received the last signal from the aircraft at 625 feet (190m) “just seconds after take off”.

On a X post, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said, “The tragedy in Ahmedabad has stunned and saddened us. It is heartbreaking beyond words.

“In this sad hour, my thoughts are with everyone affected by it…Have been in touch with ministers and authorities who are working to assist those affected,” he has added.

National animal census report released

The report of the National Animal Census conducted on March 15, was officially released at the Ministry of Agriculture today (June 12).

Accordingly, the islandwide survey shows the following numbers of wild animals:

Toque monkeys (Rilawa) – 5.17 million
Gray Langurs (Wandura) – 1.74 million
Giant Squirrel (Dandu Lena) – 2.66 million
Peacocks – 4.24 million

Writ petition against Nilantha Jayawardhane fixed for support

A writ petition filed by the Centre for Society and Religion, seeking an order to conduct a credible investigation and take appropriate actions against Senior DIG Nilantha Jayawardane for his omission and serious dereliction of duty which led to the Easter Sunday bombings in 2019, was today (June 12) fixed for support by the Court of Appeal.

The two-judge-bench comprising Justices Mayadunne Corea and Mahen Gopallawa fixed the matter for support on October 14.

The Centre for Society and Religion, its Chairman Fr. Rohan Silva and Surach Nilanga, a victim of the Easter Sunday attacks, filed this petition naming the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Senior DIG Nilantha Jayawardena and the Attorney General as respondents.
