Today (Jan. 25) marks the Duruthu full moon Poya Day.

It is a significant day to Sri Lankans as it marks Gautama Buddha’s first visit to Sri Lanka after attaining Enlightenment.

Upon the request of God Sumana Saman, the Buddha offered his hair relics (Kesha Dhathu) to the god and those relics are enshrined in the Mahiyangana Stupa.

It is also stated in Buddhist literature that the Indian King Bimbisara offered the Veluvanaramaya to the Buddha and the Mahasangha on a Duruthu Poya day.
