The Colombo Magistrate Court has imposed an overseas travel ban on a company owner who allegedly defaulted on payment of Rs 9.8 million to the Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF) accounts of employees who worked on several projects including the Bandaranaike International Airport project funded by JAICA.
The owner of N T Perera of Ceylon Pvt Ltd was subjected to the overseas travel ban by Colombo Additional Magistrate Pavithra S Pathirana. The additional magistrate also ordered that summons be issued on the suspect for him to appear before court on December 19.
The action had been taken after a complaint had been lodged by the Additional Labour Commissioner of Colombo East, Parakrama Wijewardene.
The complaint came after the suspect refused to accept summons issued to him to appear before courts, the East Colombo District (East) Labour office informed courts.
The construction of the project had started in 2017 and had been halted in September 2022 due to the economic crisis.
The main consulting firm, Japan Airport Consultants INC has removed this company since 2023.
The company had not paid EPF deducted, amount deposited by the company as well as the surcharge, amounting to a total Rs 9.8 million.
The suspect had violated the Employees’ Provident Fund Act, and the complaint had been lodged to recover the defaulted money.
The court notified the Immigration and Emigration Controller that the suspect had been subjected to an overseas travel ban and ordered to take necessary steps.
