Two committees are appointed to investigate the allegations related to the Easter attack

In a determined effort to seek truth and justice following the tragic 2019 Easter Sunday Bombings, President Ranil Wickremesinghe has taken a significant step by appointing a committee, led by a retired Supreme Court judge.

The President’s Media Division said this committee’s primary mission is to investigate the serious allegations recently brought to light by British network Channel 4 in a broadcast video.

The PMD said the allegations have added fuel to the fire, as a former Attorney General has made similar claims, suggesting the existence of a mastermind behind the devastating Easter bomb attack.

To address these concerns comprehensively, the government is preparing to establish a Parliamentary Select Committee specifically to probe these disturbing assertions.

The PMD added the gravity of the situation has prompted the Head of State to ensure a thorough review of all available information.

As part of this process, the two forthcoming reports will be presented to Parliament, along with the existing Parliamentary Select Committee report on the Easter bomb attack and the Presidential Commission report on the same tragic event.

This comprehensive approach is aimed at providing lawmakers with a comprehensive understanding of the situation, paving the way for well-informed and decisive actions.

A series of coordinated suicide bombings left 269 innocent lives lost and nearly 500 individuals severely injured on the 21st of April 2019.

The President’s Media Division said as the nation grapples with the legacy of this tragic event, President Wickremesinghe’s actions represent a determined effort to uncover the truth and ensure accountability in the face of grave allegations.

It added, the path to justice for the victims and their families remains at the forefront of the government’s agenda as these critical investigations unfold.

Govt to approve import of 300,000 MT of maize

Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, Land and Irrigation – K.D. Lal Kantha has announced that the government has decided to import 300,000 MT of maize.

Speaking to the media after attending a District Development Committee meeting at the Kandy District Secretariat yesterday (July 03), the Minister explained that this decision was taken to prevent traders from artificially inflating maize prices.

He stated that certain large and medium-scale businesses dealing with animal feed have been hoarding maize, buying it from farmers at fair prices and reselling it at much higher rates.

According to the Minister, these traders were trying to push maize prices up to Rs.190-200 per kilogram, which would have driven up the cost of eggs to Rs.200 each and increased meat prices significantly.

The Minister emphasized that while businesses are entitled to make a profit, the government will not allow unfair price manipulation. He also noted that, in the past, even ministers profited from animal products, but those days have ended and racketeers will not be allowed to control the market.

To prevent excessive price drops that could hurt farmers, the Food Security Committee has proposed imposing a tax on imported maize, he said.
