Two new police divisions named Matara Crime Division (MCD) and Galle Crime Division (GCD) have been set up in the Southern Province.
Police said the MCD will focus on tackling crimes in Matara and Hambantota Districts while the GCD will assign officers to tackle crimes in Galle District.
The MCD will be opened today (14) in Mirissa by Senior DIG in charge of the Southern Province Ajith Rohana.
The new unit consists of 30 specially trained officers and the officers have been empowered with special weapons training, police said. The new unit is equipped with high-tech equipment as well.
Meanwhile, the police said that the GCD will be opened in Ambalangoda in near future.
