The Jaffna Police have launched an investigation into the death of a 17-year-old girl who was working as a domestic aide at a house for a salary of Rs.25,000.
Northern Province Governor P. S. M. Charles has informed the senior police officers of Jaffna to immediately conduct an investigation into the incident and arrest the perpetrators.
A 17-year-old girl named Ketheeswaran Dharmika, a resident of Mudaliar Kovil Adi, Vaddukoddai in Jaffna, has been sent to work as a domestic aide at a house in Jaffna by her mother due to poverty.
Although the employer had offered to pay her Rs.25,000 per month, she had only been given Rs.5,000.
The employer, who prohibited the mother from visiting the child, had given the opportunity to talk to the mother only for three minutes a month.
The employer had eventually prohibited the child from speaking to the mother after about four months and had not paid the wages as well.
After a while, the mother received a message that the girl had passed away. The mother told the Jaffna Police that she had suspicions about the death.
Premakumar Namasivayam, the Judicial Medical Officer of the Jaffna Teaching Hospital, gave an open verdict regarding the death and sent the samples to the government analyst for further examination.
The Jaffna Police are investigating the incident.
