Today (7) marks the Unduvap Poya, the last Full Moon Poya day of the year.

The Poya commemorates the arrival of Sangamitta Theri in Sri Lanka with a Bo sapling from the sacred Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi in India at the invitation of King Devanam Piyatissa.

Sangamitta Theri was responsible for establishing the Bhikkhuni Sasana in Sri Lanka during the month of Unduvap.

Meanwhile, the 2022-2023 Sri Pada pilgrimage season begins today. The six-month long pilgrimage season ends on Vesak Poya Day next year.
