The Colombo Chief High Court sentenced five individuals, including the former Deputy Inspector General of Police Vaas Gunawardena, to four years of rigorous imprisonment.
The verdict comes after a prolonged legal battle stemming from the abduction of Dhanushka Nipuna Ramanayaka, a student at an IT institute in Malabe, on August 4, 2009.
The court found the accused guilty of seven charges, predominantly centered around the forceful kidnapping of Ramanayaka.
Alongside Vaas Gunawardena, his son Ravindu Sameera Vaas Gunawardena, and police officers Indika Pushpa Kumara, Damith Priyankara, and Shanta Lalith Withana, have been handed down the same sentence of imprisonment with hard labor.
The presiding judge acquitted Shyamali Priyadarshani Perera, wife of Vaas Gunawardena, and two other police officers, Lakshman Tillakaratne and Samantha Sandun Dissanayake, of all charges.
