Veteran journalist Sumana Nellampitiya passes away at 80

Sumana Nellampitiya, an icon of Sri Lankan radio and television and a veteran journalist with a distinguished career spanning 42 years, has passed away this morning at the age of 80.

Nellampitiya officially joined the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC) in 1967 as a relief announcer.

Over the years, she explored various roles, including presenting, scriptwriting, editing, and producing programs.

A versatile talent, she eventually transitioned to television, making history as the island’s first television news presenter.

Her contributions to both radio and television have left an indelible mark on the media landscape of Sri Lanka.
