South Asia’s largest car assembly factory, the Volkswagen factory, will be opened today (17) by President Ranil Wickremesinghe, UNP Deputy Leader, President’s Senior Advisor Akila Viraj Kariyawasam said.
Located in Kuliyapitiya, the factory, operated by Western Automobile, currently assembles 25 vehicles daily, including motorcars, vans, and double cabs.
The facility will create 1,000 direct and 1,000 indirect jobs, with a training school for professionals also planned. This initiative is expected to reduce vehicle costs, making cars more affordable for Sri Lankans.
