The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) informed the court yesterday (12) that it will object to the request made by the deceased Janashakthi Group Director Dinesh Schaffter’s wife to use his mobile phone number.

The CID officials informed the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court that they object to the request on the grounds that the cause of businessman Schaffter’s death has not yet been revealed and further investigations are still being carried out.

Since the mobile phone used by the deceased contained social network data including WhatsApp, Messenger, Facebook, as well as about 20 different mobile phone applications, President’s Counsel Anuja Premaratne, who appeared on behalf of the Schaffter family, requested the court to preserve the mobile phone data without erasing it.

In addition, the lawyers also requested to prevent third parties from accessing and checking bank accounts details of Mr. Schaffter since he has done transactions through the mobile phone.

The Magistrate who considered the requests ordered the concerned mobile service provider to preserve the data on the mobile phone of the deceased and to take necessary steps to prevent access to the bank accounts through it.

The Magistrate announced that a decision on whether to allow Mr.Schaffter’s wife to use his mobile phone number will be announced on the 15th.
