The Attorney General has been instructed to submit a progress report regarding the awarding of compensation to fishermen who were affected by the 2021 X-Press Pearl disaster.
The order was issued when the petition filed over the matter was taken up before a four-member Supreme Court bench consisting of Justices Murdu Fernando, Shiran Gooneratne, Achala Wengappuli and Priyantha Fernando.
The counsel appearing on behalf of the petitioners informed the court that her clients, fishermen from Negombo and Chilaw, have not received any payments since November, 2022.
In response, representing the Attorney General, Additional Solicitor General Nerin Pulle said necessary measures are being taken to pay compensation.
Justice Murdu Fernando said compensation must be paid without any delays.
Furthermore, directives were issued to submit a report regarding the awarding of compensation to fishermen by the 15th of September.
