President Xi Jinping attended the opening ceremony at the National Stadium in Beijing and declared the Games open.

The opening ceremony was directed by Zhang Yimou, the same Oscar-nominated cinematographer who oversaw both the opening and closing ceremonies at Beijing 2008.
