This year marked 70 years of independence from the British rule since February 04, 1948.

The event was held under the patronage of the President Maithripala Sirisena, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe. Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex and the Countess of Wessex also participated, representing Queen Elizabeth II.
