Navy sinks dilapidated LTTE ship

The ship used by the LTTE named ‘welin’ which was taken over by the Navy and used by them after the war as A522, was anchored at the Colombo port until yesterday under the custody of the Navy. However, as the ship was in a dilapidated condition and no longer seaworthy, the Navy took measures to sink the ageing ship.

Accordingly, the A522craft was sunk in the deep sea area off the Western coast by the Navy yesterday (26).

These sunk ships is a boost to coral formations and as it attracts marine species who prefer to hide and breed among these ship wrecks, it could soon prove to be an asset to the tourist industry which would attract local and foreign diving enthusiasts.
