P.G. Jayaweera said he had cultivated five acres at a cost of Rs. 500,000 and got a good yield.
However, he had not harvested the pumpkins as there was no market for them.
Yesterday (29), with the support of fellow farmers, he had harvested the pumpkins. He had then taken the pumpkins to Kalawewa junction by lorries and tractors and held a pumpkin 'Dansel' instead.
Jayaweera said that he could have buried the pumpkins, but donated them instead to invoke merits on his late parents.
He said that just like other young farmers of his area, he would find another job in the future.
Visitors to the Dansel were seen thanking Jayaweera and berating agricultural authorities for not ensuring a market for agricultural produce.
