The inventor of this pair of iron shoes is Electrical Superintendent Nihal Samarakone attached to the Hatton Electricity Consumer Centre.
Currently, the method used by the electricity Board workers to climb concrete or wooden lampposts is a ladder.
However, seeing the difficulty in transporting the ladder and the safety issues related to the use of a ladder, Samarakone had focused his attention on inventing a safer and less cumbersome method.
He noted that a person could climb a post at the speed of walking and that these shoes offered greater protection for the worker.
Nihal Samarakone added that these shoes weigh about a kilo and measures have also been taken to obtain a patent certification for this invention.
Samarakone was also an officer who was instrumental in introducing the 5S concept to the Ceylon Electricity Board, while the Hatton Electricity Consumer Services Centre also functions under the 5S system.
