It is singular that Danushka Goonetileke and Bhanuka Rajapaksa who failed the recent fitness test, were included in the squad.
Sri Lanka Cricket had earlier stated that the four players who failed the test would be allowed to retake it only after 40 days. However, they were included in the squad after taking a fitness test only four days later.
Critics point out that while Sports minister - Namal Rajapaksa is continuing to prolong the appointment of the selection committee, the entire squad for the West Indies tour had been named in an unethical manner.
Why the delay?
Meanwhile, it is said that the appointment of Pramodya Wickremasinghe (Chairman), Romesh Kaluwitharana and Hemantha Wickremaratne to the Sri Lanka Cricket Selection Committee has been delayed due to pressure from certain members of the National Olympic Committee and the National Sports Committee.
According to internal sources, several former cricketers, a businessman and several members directly involved in cricket and politics are said to have spearheaded in raising this issue.
The businessman is said to be a power and energy sector.
According to the sources, a former captain currently holding a coaching post is also working together with these persons and has continuously been pressuring the political authorities and various parties not to appoint the relevant selection committee.
Media previously reported that they had tried to directly influence the selection of the cricket team through a former member of the cricket selection committee. It is said that the group is currently plagued with the issue of not having a person in the new selection committee, whom they can keep under their influence.
Sri Lanka National Team will leave for the Caribbean on Feb. 23 for the tour.
During the tour, Sri Lanka will play 03 T20Is, 03 ODIs, and 02 Test matches from March 03 - April 02.
