Victorious weightlifting team returns

The Sri Lankan weightlifting team that claimed one gold and five bronze medals at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship arrived in Sri Lanka this morning.

Two men’s and two women’s teams represented Sri Lanka at the tournament in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

The ten-day competition concluded on Friday in which 20 Lankan weightlifters took part.

Women’s weight lifter Srimali Samarakoon won the gold medal in the under 45kg weight class.

Meanwhile, Indika Dissanayake - a Commonwealth Games silver medallist, claimed the bronze medal in the 73kg category.

In the 67kg category, Sri Lanka’s Manoj Wijesinghe won the bronze medal while Thilanka Palagasinghe secured a bronze in the 61kg category.

Meanwhile, two bronze medals were claimed by Chinatana Vidhanange and Nadishani Rajapaksa.

NewsRadio airport correspondent said the team arrived at the Bandaranaike International Airport on an Emirates flight from Dubai.

The President of the Sri Lanka Weightlifting Federation and officials of the Tri-Forces Weightlifting Club received the team at the airport.
