4 decades since Sri Lanka got Test status! Featured

Today (17) marks the 40th anniversary of Sri Lanka's entry into Test cricket.

The first Test match, which became a golden milestone in the history of Sri Lankan cricket, began on 17 February 1982 against England at the P. Saravanamuttu Stadium.

Bandula Warnapura captained the Sri Lankan team while Keith Fletcher captained the England team.

David Gower (131) was the top scorer in both the innings while Roy Dias (77) was the top scorer for Sri Lanka.

Asantha de Mel took five wickets for Sri Lanka in the two innings.

Asantha de Mel is the first player to win Test status for Sri Lanka and 157 players since him have followed.

Charith Asalanka is the last name on the list of players to enter the Test field for Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka has played 299 Tests so far, winning 95, losing 113 and drawing 91.
