Where is the 688 mn raised to host the C'wealth?

Hundreds of millions of rupees have been embezzled in an attempt to get Hambantota to host the 2018 Commonwealth Games, the Anti-Corruption Voice said at a media briefing yesterday (03)exposing a ring of corruption.

Expressing his views at the media briefing, JVP Leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake said that a company named C.W.G. was established aimed at obtaining the hosting of the Commonwealth Games.

He said that this was initiated to promote hospitality and that former Central Bank Governor Ajith Nivard Cabraal had provided Rs.100,000 towards it while other state and private institutions had also provided funds.

Dissanayake said that the amount received was Rs. 688 million, but it is not mentioned anywhere as to what happened to this money.

This, he said, is misappropriation.

Dissanayake further stated that the Ministry of Sports has contributed Rs. 100 million on behalf of this promotion company and in addition to this money, millions of unaccounted monies had also been received.

In addition, it was alleged that a sum of Rs. 100 million provided by Lalith Kotelawala for the construction of the Mahinda Rajapaksa Stadium in Diyagama has also been misplaced.
