15-members appointed to National Sports Council

Sports Minister – Harin Fernando has appointed a 15-member National Sports Council.

Accordingly, Dr. Maiya Gunasekara has been appointed as the chairman of the council, replacing Arjuna Ranatunga.

The members of the new National Sports Council are as follows :

1. Dr. Maiya Gunasekara – Chairman
2. Mr. I.U. Wickramasuriya – Secretary
3. Mrs. Sriyani Kulawansa
4. Major General (Retd.) Rajitha Ampemohotti
5. Prof. Arjuna de Silva
6. Mr. Panduka Keerthinada
7. Mr. Ana G. G. Punchihewa
8. Mr. Malik Kader
9. Dr. S.V.D. Nanayakkara
10. Mr. Hafeez Marso
11. Mr. Sidath Wettimuny
12. General (Retired) Jagath Jayasuriya
13. Mrs. Anuradha Illeperuma
14. Prof. Shemal Fernando
15. Mr. Kamal Deshapriya

Meanwhile, the Sports Minister has also appointed the National Sports Selection Committee.

The committee comprises of;

1. General Shavendra Silva – Chairman
2. Mr. Arjun Rishaya Fernando – Secretary
3. Dr. Maiya Gunasekara
4. Mr. Suresh Subramaniyam
5. Mr. Nalinda Sampath Ilangakoon

2 including IUSF convener granted bail

Two persons including the convenor of the Inter-University Students’ Federation (IUSF) – Madushan Chandrajith have been granted bail,

They were arrested and remanded for staging a protest demonstration in front of the Health Ministry, defying a court order.

The duo was each released on two surety bails of Rs. 1 million each after being produced before the Maligakanda Magistrate’s Court.

CoA orders to re-accept rejected nomination papers

The Court of Appeal has ordered the relevant Returning Officers to re-accept nearly 37 rejected nomination papers submitted by candidates to contest for several Local Government (LG) institutions islandwide.

This order was issued by the two-member Appeals Court bench comprising the Acting President of the Court of Appeal Justice Mohammed Thahir Laffar and Justice K.P. Fernando after considering writ petitions filed by several political parties and independent groups challenging the rejection of their nomination papers submitted to contest the upcoming LG Polls.

Yoshitha & his grandmother served indictments ; bailed

The Colombo High Court today (April 04) granted bail to Yoshitha Rajapaksa and his grandmother Daisy Forrest, after serving them with indictments.

Indictments were served before Colombo High Court Judge Aditya Patabendige in relation to a case filed under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act.

Following this, they have been released on two surety bails of Rs.500,000 each.

The case will be taken up for hearing once again on May 30.
