Bangladeshi cricket captain Shakib Al Hasan secured a parliamentary seat in the country on Sunday, achieving a resounding victory in a general election that the opposition had boycotted, according to an official statement.
The versatile 36-year-old cricketer, who serves as the captain across all formats, contested in the Magura constituency for the Awami League and registered a landslide victory.
However, the freshly elected Shakib has also sparked fresh controversy, after a video of him slapping a fan had gone viral online.
The video shows Shakib, freshly elected and surrounded by a crowd of people, suddenly turning and slapping an individual behind him. The reason for this outburst is not explicitly stated but suggests that the behavior of the crowd might have provoked the cricketer.
The all rounder has previously faced scrutiny for his public behavior on several occasions.
