FIFA allows SL to play in qualifiers on strict conditions

Sri Lanka has been allowed into the official draw for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers on a strict conditional basis.

The Football Federation of Sri Lanka said FIFA and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) have given approval based on strict conditions.

The FIFA World Cup Qualifiers will be held on October 12 and 17.

The Football Federation of Sri Lanka will need to conduct its election of office bearers at least 10 days before, or the team will not be allowed to participate in the qualifiers.

The wedding of Mukesh Ambani and Neeta Ambani’s youngest son, Anant Ambani, to Radhika Merchant has taken social media by storm, featuring some of the biggest celebrities and sporting personalities from around the globe.

Lavish wedding celebrations for the son of Asia’s richest man resumed on Saturday with a star-studded guest list including Hollywood celebrities, global business leaders, and two former British prime ministers.

Billionaire tycoon Mukesh Ambani’s youngest son Anant and fiancée Radhika Merchant, both 29, are tying the knot this weekend in Mumbai, India, following months of pre-marriage parties.

Saturday will see a blessing ceremony during which the world’s rich and famous will greet and pay their respects to the couple at a 16,000-capacity convention center owned by the Ambani family’s conglomerate.

This will be followed by a grand party where unconfirmed reports say pop stars Drake, Lana Del Rey, and Adele are likely to perform.

Wanindu resigns from captaincy

In a statement, Sri Lanka Cricket has  announced that National Men’s T20I Captain Wanindu Hasaranga has decided to resign from the captaincy.

According to Sri Lanka Cricket, Wanindu Hasaranga said it is in the best interest of Sri Lanka Cricket that he decided to relinquish the captaincy duties and remain in the side as a player.

Wanindu Hasaranga in his resignation letter said that Sri Lanka will always have his utmost best efforts as a player, and vouched to continue his support and stand by his team and leadership as always. 

Sri Lanka Cricket, while accepting his resignation, said that Hasaranga will remain an important player for the team in their international cricketing plans.

Dilhani to lead SL contingent at 2024 Paris Olympic Games

Hangzhou Asian Games women’s javelin throw silver medalist Dilhani Lekamge of Army SC has been named as the captain of the Sri Lanka Athletic Team for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, which will be held from July 26 to August 11 in France.
The 37-year-old athlete, a past student of Mahinda College, Eheliyagoda, is the most senior member of the Sri Lanka Athletic contingent for the Paris Olympic Games.

Dilhani is also set to be appointed as Sri Lanka’s overall captain for the Paris Olympic Games, according to reliable sources from the National Olympic Committee of Sri Lanka (NOCSL).

The NOCSL is set to name the overall captain of the Sri Lankan contingent for the Paris Olympic Games on Monday.

Meanwhile, Secretary of Sri Lanka Athletics, Saman Gunawardena, will be the manager of the three-member Sri Lanka Athletic Team.In addition, two swimmers and one badminton player will also represent Sri Lanka at the Paris Olympic Games.

Shuttler Viren Nettasinghe is the only Sri Lankan to qualify directly for the Paris Olympic Games, while Kyle Abeysinghe and Ganga Senevirathna are the other two swimmers.

Athletes Dilhani, Tharushi Karunarathna, and Aruna Dharshana qualified for the Paris Olympic Games through the IAAF World Rankings.
