Kamindu, Tammy named players of the month

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has today revealed the ICC Players of the Month for September 2024 as Sri Lanka’s Kamindu Mendis and England’s Tammy Beaumont.
Mendis continued a record-breaking streak in Test cricket during September to win the ICC Men’s Player of the Month, while Beaumont starred in England’s short format success in Ireland to secure the ICC Women’s Player of the Month award.

Both players won their respective accolades for the second time – Mendis having previously won in March 2024, with Beaumont backing up her other previous award in February 2021.

ICC Men’s Player of the Month for September, Kamindu Mendis: “I am honoured to be once again chosen as the ICC Men’s Player of the Month, and this accolade brings me immense happiness and pride, as I believe all the hard work that was put into becoming the player that I am today is starting to pay off and being recognized consistently in the global stage.

“This recognition gives me further strength to continue my good work on the cricketing field and aspire for bigger achievements, thus helping my team win games and bring glory to our country and happiness to our fans.”

Reacting to her award win, ICC Women’s Player of the Month, Tammy Beaumont, said: “Thank you to everyone who voted for me as ICC Women’s Player of the Month for September. It was a great tour in Ireland with an inexperienced England team and it was really nice to contribute personally.

“I saw firsthand how well Aimee Maguire bowled for Ireland and she fully deserved the nomination. Congratulations to Esha Oza too.”

SL squad announced for T20I series against B’desh

Sri Lanka Cricket has announced a 17-member squad for the upcoming three-match T20I series against Bangladesh, set to begin on July 10.

The squad will be led by Charith Asalanka, with notable inclusions such as Kusal Mendis, Dinesh Chandimal, Wanindu Hasaranga, and the return of experienced all-rounders Dasun Shanaka and Chamika Karunaratne.

Match Schedule: 

1st T20I on July 10th – PICS, Kandy 

2nd T20I on July 13th – RDICS Dambulla

Sanjog Gupta named ICC CEO

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced the appointment of Sanjog Gupta as its Chief Executive Officer (CEO). 

Sanjog will assume office on July 7th, 2025, becoming the 07th CEO of the ICC.

Sanjog Gupta currently serves as CEO – Sports & Live Experiences at JioStar and brings with him over two decades of cross-functional experience.ICC Chairman, Jay Shah said: “I am pleased to announce that Sanjog Gupta has been appointed as the CEO of the ICC. Sanjog brings extensive experience in sports strategy and commercialisation, which will be invaluable for the ICC.

“His deep understanding of the global sports as well as M&E landscape combined with his continued curiosity about the cricket fan’s perspective and passion for technology will prove essential in our ambition to grow the game in the coming years. Our goal is to move beyond traditional boundaries and establish cricket as a regular sport in the Olympics, growing its expanse across the world and deepening its roots in its core markets.

“We considered several exceptional candidates for this position, but the Nominations Committee unanimously recommended Sanjog. The ICC Board Directors look forward to working closely with him, and I would like to welcome him on behalf of everyone at the ICC.”

UAE beat SL in Rugby World Cup qualifier

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) secured a 29–21 victory over Sri Lanka at the Race Course Ground in Colombo.

In a fierce game, the UAE bagged the win,  strengthening their bid for a spot in the Rugby World Cup 2027 qualification pathway.

The result cements the UAE’s position as the second-best side in the region, trailing only behind Hong Kong in the 2025 Asia Rugby Emirates Men’s Championship standings.
