Sri Lanka squandered a strong start, crashing from 121 for no loss to 164 for 8, to lose the first T20 against New Zealand by 8 runs at Mount Maunganui.

Chasing a 173-run target, openers Kusal Mendis (46) and Pathum Nissanka (90) put up a 121-run partnership in 13.3 overs. However, a dramatic collapse saw Sri Lanka lose 8 wickets for 43 runs in 5.5 overs, with Nissanka’s dismissal in the 18th over at 153 marking the turning point.

Jacob Duffy’s decisive over, which broke the opening stand and claimed two more wickets, earned him the Player of the Match award. Earlier, New Zealand recovered from 65 for 5, with Daryl Mitchell (62) and Michael Bracewell (59) lifting the total to 170.
