Ratnayakes conquer Tri-Nation final

Sri Lanka ‘A’ secured a dominant victory over Ireland ‘A’ to clinch the title in their Tri-Nation Cricket final played at Abu Dhabi yesterday (April 25).

Batting first, Ireland ‘A’ were bowled out for just 200 runs in 47.3 overs.

In reply, Sri Lanka ‘A’ were in dire straits losing half of the side for just 43 runs. However, Pavan Rathnayake and Milan Rathnayake salvaged the innings, adding a match-winning unbeaten partnership worth 160 runs for the 6th wicket, sealing victory with 15.3 overs to spare.

Pavan scored 77 runs off 76 balls with 09 fours and 02 sixes while Milan hit 77 runs off 83 balls with 09 fours and 02 sixes.

Milan Rathnayake was named Player of the Final for his all-round performance, having also claimed 3 wickets for just 24 runs in the Irish innings.

Tharindu Rathnayake also stood out, taking 04 wickets for 33 runs in a key performance.

It is singular that all three Rathnayake players – Milan, Pawan, and Tharindu -were key contributors towards SL ‘A’s victory.

The team was captained by Sadeera Samarawickrama, with Avishka Gunawardene serving as head coach.

Major reshuffle in Police: Senior officers transferred to key positions

Several senior police officers of the Sri Lanka Police have been transferred and appointed to new positions with immediate effect, the Police Media Division announced.

According to the Police Media Division, these transfers and appointments have been made with the approval of the National Police Commission (NPC).

The officers and their new appointments are as follows:

1. Senior Superintendent of Police C. Gunaratne

Transferred from the position of Director of the Police Cadet Division to the position of Director of the Sri Lanka Police College. He will also continue to cover duties as the Director of the Police Cadet Division.

2. Senior Superintendent of Police B.A.E. Prasanna

Transferred from the position of Officer-in-Charge of the Mount Lavinia Division to the position of Officer-in-Charge of the Kebithigollewa Division.

3. Senior Superintendent of Police A.J. Gunasekara

Transferred from the position of Director of the Bureau for the Investigation of Abuse of Children and Women to the position of Officer-in-Charge of the Mount Lavinia Division.

4. Senior Superintendent of Police H.W.I.S. Muthumala (Female)

Transferred from the position of Director of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to the position of Director of the Bureau for the Investigation of Abuse of Children and Women.

5. Superintendent of Police G.V.A.K.C. Ariyawansa

Transferred from the position of Director of the Gampola Division to the position of Director of the Central Criminal Investigation Bureau (CCIB).

Body of missing fisherman from capsized boat, recovered

The body of one of the two fishermen who went missing after a multi-day fishing vessel capsized in the seas off the coast of Paravi Wella in Tangalle, has been recovered.

The Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) confirmed that the fisherman’s body was recovered during search operations, which were conducted with the assistance of the Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF).

The fishing vessel, named “Maxim Putha 1,” was carrying six fishermen when the accident occurred while returning to shore after poaching.

A total of six fishermen were onboard the vessel when it capsized off the coast of Paravi Wella Beach in Tangalle, four of whom were rescued with the help of a dinghy.

Efforts are underway to locate the remaining missing fisherman.

Meanwhile, three other boat accidents were reported yesterday in seas off Galle, Kalutara and Hikkaduwa.

Nationwide mosquito control program launches tomorrow

In response to a surge in dengue cases, health authorities will launch a special mosquito control program tomorrow (June 30), covering 16 high-risk districts across the country.

According to the National Dengue Control Unit, the program will be in continue until the 5th of July.

A total of 28,752 dengue cases have been reported islandwide so far this year.

The highest number of cases were recorded from the Western Province.

Sixteen dengue-related deaths have been reported so far this year.
