Viknaraj wins South Asian Cross Country C’ship

Sri Lankan athlete Viknaraj Vakshan clinched the senior category title at the South Asian Cross Country Championship held in Islamabad yesterday.

Representing the Sri Lanka Army, the 27-year-old, a product of Talawakele Tamil MV, marked his first international appearance with this impressive victory.

In the under-20 junior category, a Pakistani athlete secured the gold, while Sri Lanka’s 19-year-old Shivagaran Thudiharshithan from Matale Hindu College claimed the silver medal in his debut international event.

The Sri Lankan junior team also achieved a commendable runner-up finish in the junior category.

Shooting attempt in Panadura, fail

A shooting attempt was foiled this morning (June 02) in the Gemunu Mawatha area of Walana, Panadura, around 8.00 am.

02 unidentified individuals on a motorcycle attempted to shoot a person, but the firearm failed to discharge, police say.

05 forests to be declared as protected reserves

In line with the upcoming World Environment Day on June 5, today (June 02) has been designated as Biodiversity Conservation Day under Sri Lanka’s National Environment Week.

To mark the occasion, the Government is set to declare five forests located in the Galle, Kegalle, and Monaragala districts as protected reserves through a special gazette notification. 

These include the Kottawa Forest in Galle, the Nilgala Forest in Monaragala, the Udaliyadda Forest near the Dehiowita site in Kegalle, the Tulhirikanda Forest covering 46 hectares in Kegalle and the Werahankanda Forest in Dehiowita, spanning 37 hectares.

July bus fare revision postponed to August

The Lanka Private Bus Owners’ Association (LPBOA) says it has been decided to postpone the annual bus fare revision (which was scheduled to be implemented in July), until August.

According to LPBOA Chairman Gemunu Wijerathne, it is not practical to revise bus fares in July, given the current situation in the country.

He made this statement while participating in a press conference held in Colombo yesterday (June 01).
