SL Navy rescues 104 distressed Myanmar nationals

Sri Lanka Navy rescued 104 distressed Myanmar nationals aboard a passenger vessel in Sri Lanka’s waters about 3.5 nautical miles north of Veththalakerni early morning yesterday.

The distressed vessel is reported to have trespassed into Sri Lanka’s territorial waters following a mechanical failure while it was carrying the passengers from Myanmar to Indonesia.

Upon receiving the distress call by the Operations Room of the Northern Naval Command, the Navy rescued the Myanmar nationals.

They were brought to the Kankasanthurai Harbour and will be handed over to relevant authorities for further action.

Advisory issued on severe lightning, heavy showers

The Meteorology Department has issued an advisory for severe lightning in five provinces today (April 14).

Thundershowers accompanied by severe lightning are likely to occur at several places in Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, Central and North-western provinces, it said.

There may be temporary localized strong winds during thundershowers. The general public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by lightning activity.

The general public is further requested to avoid using wired telephones and connected electric appliances during thunderstorms and to also avoid using open vehicles, such as bicycles, tractors, boats etc. and to beware of fallen trees and power lines.

For emergency assistance, the public is requested to contact local disaster management authorities.

The parliament vote in this regard will be held at 4.30pm on March 20.

Acting IGP Deshabandu Tennakoon issued orders to all Police stations islandwide, prohibiting Police officers in civilian clothes from stopping vehicles.
