Fire in electric scooter showroom kills 8

A fire that started at an electric scooter showroom in India killed at least eight people and injured 11, reports say.

The incident is said to be is the deadliest such incident involving electric vehicles in the country.

'The Print' reports that the showroom was an ‘illegally-run’ one and a case has been registered against the owners.

A spate of electric scooter fires this year has alarmed the government, which is keen to promote use of such two-wheelers in its fight against pollution. Early investigations have identified faulty battery cells and battery modules among the main causes.

Police have said that the fire started from the cellar of the building and spread to other floors where a hotel called Ruby Luxury Hotel is located.

Meanwhile, the Prime Minister’s Office Tuesday announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh to families of the deceased and Rs 50,000 to the injured. The Telangana government also announced an ex-gratia of Rs 3 lakh to the victims’ families.
