Maria hits the Caribbean

Hurricane Maria, strengthened to a "potentially catastrophic" category five storm, has torn into the Caribbean island of Dominica with sustained winds of 260km/h (160mph).

Hurricane Maria has been upgraded to a category five storm.

In a Facebook post, the PM of Dominica said his house had been devastated.

Forecasters says it poses a "potentially catastrophic" threat to Caribbean islands in its path.

Many islands in the path of Maria are still recovering from the devastation of Hurricane Irma earlier this month.
