SJB, SLFP to back 22A

The Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) and the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) today (20) stated their decision to support the 22nd Amendment to the Constitution.

Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa told Parliament that the 22nd Amendment to the Constitution has some positive changes when compared to the 20th Amendment and they will support the amendment based on several conditions.

Premadasa said that they will support it provided that no underhand revisions are sneaked in at the committee stage.

However, if there are unacceptable changes in the committee stages then the SJB will oppose it, he further noted.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka Freedm Party leader – Maithripala Sirisena said that the SLFP will vote in support of the 22nd Amendment on the basis that it is good for the people.

“We admit that this a very good amendment from the point of the public. We are voting in favour of this while standing in the side of the people,” he added.

However, he pointed out that the 22nd Amendment alone will not solve the current issues of the public and urged the government to focus their attention to that issue as well.
