Ranil denies claims of using state funds for London visit

The Office of the former President Ranil Wickremesinghe has issued a statement today (March 18) denying the claims that the former President and his wife Prof. Maithree Wickramasinghe travelled to London for a private visit in 2023 using state funds.

The statement notes that Wickremesinghe visited London three times in 2023 : The first visit was on May 9, 2023, to attend the coronation of King Charles III. The second visit was for the 40th anniversary session of the International Democratic Union (IDU), while he was attending the Paris Summit.

Ranil Wickremesinghe, who also attended the G77 Summit in Havana, visited New York to attend the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) before traveling to London for his third visit.

The ceremony to confer the title of Professor on Mrs. Maithree Wickramasinghe by the University of Wolverhampton in the United Kingdom took place during this time and Ranil Wickremesinghe was invited to the ceremony and attended it while returning from New York, the statement said.

During these visits, Ranil Wickremesinghe also met with numerous heads of state. As the wife of the then President, Professor Maithree Wickramasinghe participated in meetings and workshops organized at the international level, according to the statement.

Furthermore, the statement clarified that although it was initially planned for Ranil Wickremesinghe to leave the city of London in the evening after arriving from New York, his return to Sri Lanka was delayed until the next day due to several meetings scheduled for that evening.

The former President’s Office stated that it is misleading to claim that a substantial amount of government funds was spent on a visit to London by former President Ranil Wickremesinghe and officials. This also demonstrates that the current government lacks an understanding of diplomatic trips, it further said.

As the President, Ranil Wickremesinghe did not make any private visit to London at government expense in 2023 while all statements made regarding this matter are false, the statement concluded.

The statement has been issued by the Office of the former President Ranil Wickremesinghe in response to a statement made by the Leader of the House, Minister Bimal Ratnayake in Parliament last week.

49 schools in Kandy to be closed next week

49 schools in Kandy town and surrounding areas will remain closed from April 21 – 25 in view of the special exposition of the Sacred Tooth Relic, the Central Province Chief Secretary and Education Secretary – Madhupani Piyasena said.

The special exposition of the Sacred Tooth Relic is scheduled to take place at the Sri Dalada Maligawa in Kandy from 3:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on April 18. Thereafter, it will continue daily for ten days, from 12:00 noon to 5:30 p.m.

The schools that will closed are as follows :

Norochcholai shuts down one generator

The Norochcholai Power Plant has temporarily shut down one of its generators due to a decrease in daily electricity demand, according to Dhammika Wimalaratne, the spokesperson for the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB).

This measure has been in effect since April 11th.

The CEB expects to reconnect the inactive generator to the national grid by April 21st.

According to reports, power plants that generate electricity using fuel have also been deactivated, prioritizing electricity generation from hydropower plants and renewable energy sources.

Disconnect only if an SMS is received

Meanwhile, the CEB has urged rooftop solar system owners to temporarily disconnect their units only if they receive an SMS notification from the board and only until 03.00 pm.

A statement by the CEB notes that they have decided that the electricity supply needs to be managed during the April holidays, following a detailed study on the forecast demand for electricity during the time period.

Oil anointing rituals at Dehiwala Zoo (Pics)

The oil anointing tradition for this year’s Sinhala and Tamil New Year was held today (April 16).

The National Zoological Gardens of Sri Lanka in Dehiwala also performed these rituals on several of its inhabitants.

The rituals began with the ‘Kadol’ elephant, continuing a customary tradition of blessing elephants during the New Year period.

The head of a brown bear recently received by the zoo from United Arab Emirates, was also anointed.

However, the most special zoo resident that was included in these rituals, was the 153-year-old giant tortoise, recognized as the oldest living animal in Sri Lanka.

The event was organized by the zoo’s management team under the guidance of Director General Chandana Rajapaksa and coordinated by Deputy Director Dinushika Manawadu.
