Rs.30,000 mn. worth of crops destroyed!

In the first half of 2022, 144,989 metric tons of 28 food crops including paddy and 93 million coconuts have been destroyed by wild animals.

This was revealed in a research report prepared by the Hector Kobbekaduwa Agricultural Research and Training Institute on the impact of wild animals on farmlands.

According to the report, the value of the food crops destroyed by wild animals is Rs.30,215 million.

Drawing attention to the issues pointed out in this report, the Ministry of Wildlife and Forest Resources Conservation has taken steps to appoint a committee to study the measures to be taken in future to prevent the damage caused by wild animals to plantations and to prevent elephant-human conflicts by obtaining opinions and suggestions from various parties.

Sri Lanka’s visa fees to be unchanged

A cabinet decision was taken today (May 06) to maintain the existing $50 fee for a 30-day visa for foreigners visiting the country, the PMD announces.

It has also been decided to continue offering free visa services to citizens of 07 countries: India, China, Russia, Japan, Malaysia, Thailand, and Indonesia.

Meanwhile, visa issuance responsibility will be handled solely by the Dept. of immigration & Emigration, the PMD adds.

180 passports found dumped in a drain!

A bag with 180 passports has been found in a drain in the Maharagama area.

According to reports, the passports had been obtained by a foreign employment agency operating in the Maharagama area, promising foreign employment.

It is reported that the owner of the agency had fled the area, after duping a number of people and swindling nearly Rs. 260 million.
