18 years since tsunami; 2-minute silence to be observed!

The main commemoration of the 2004 Tsunami disaster would be held in front of the ‘Peraliya Tsunami Memorial’ in Galle with the participation of State Minister of Defence and other government officials including the Defence Secretary, the armed forces and the police as well as the community.

Accordingly, two minutes of silence will be observed from 9.25 am to 9.27 am on December 26 in remembrance of the people who perished in the tsunami and other natural disasters.

Fourteen coastal districts of Sri Lanka were affected by the tsunami disaster in 2004 and the death toll was around 35,000.

In order to remember the people who perished in the tsunami and other natural disasters, the Government of Sri Lanka commemorates this day as National Safety Day according to the Cabinet Paper No. 15/1975/715/001-1 of 2005.

Country has sufficient insulin stocks – Nalinda

Minister of Health Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa has assured that the government has already distributed sufficient insulin stocks for the next four months.

Therefore, he urged the public not to have any unnecessary fears over the matter.

Speaking earlier today (April 22) during the weekly Cabinet briefing, he assured that there is enough insulin available in the country until September this year.
He added that measures are taken to maintain medicine stocks sufficient for a period of four to six months to prevent any shortages.

Weather advisory for severe lightning & heavy rain

The Department of Meteorology has issued a warning for strong lightning and heavy rain in several parts of the country, effective until 11:00 pm today (April 22).

Thundershowers accompanied by intense lightning are expected this evening and tonight in the Eastern, Uva, Central, and Northern provinces, as well as in the Hambantota and Polonnaruwa districts.

Temporary strong winds may also occur during these storms.

Police appoints committee to study PCOI report on Easter Sunday bombings

Sri Lanka Police have appointed a four-member committee to study the final report of the Presidential Commission of Inquiry into the Easter Sunday bomb attacks.

According to Police Spokesman SSP Buddhika Manathunga, the committee is headed by a Senior DIG, Asanka Karawita.

The remaining members consist of the DIG in charge of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), the Director of the CID, and the Director of the Terrorism Investigation Division (TID). 

He added that several more sub-committees have been appointed under the purview of the main committee.
